For the past few years, CBD has been used as a treatment for many of the health disorders that affect the human body. The therapeutic properties of CBD help to treat health disorders better than many traditional medications. Now people are wondering whether CBD helps to treat glaucoma also. Some studies are showing encouraging results on the use of CBD for glaucoma treatment. Here, we will discuss whether CBD is a possible treatment for glaucoma.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye disease that occurs due to abnormal pressure in the eyes and usually affects older adults. It harms the optical nerve of the eyes and can lead to complete blindness. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in older adults and its exact cause is still unidentified. The effect of glaucoma is very slow and can lead to a permanent loss of vision.
Here are the different types of glaucoma that affects people.
- Closed-angle glaucoma
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Pigmentary glaucoma
- Low-tension glaucoma
Glaucoma is mainly caused by damage to the optic nerve and the higher than normal pressure inside the eye. Other causes of glaucoma include severe eye infection, chemical injury to the eye, inflammation, and blocked blood vessels in the eye.
Using CBD For Glaucoma
There is no conclusive evidence that suggests the use of CBD as a possible glaucoma treatment. However, there are few studies showing that the use of CBD could lower the eye pressure. Recently, a study was conducted on rats to find out the effects of cannabinoids on the eye. During the study, eye drop that contained cannabinoids, such as CBD, THC, etc. were administered to rats and observed a 30% decrease in eye pressure within 8 hours.
CBD can be helpful for other health issues caused by glaucoma. People suffering from glaucoma often experience nausea, vomiting, and severe pain. Antiemetic and pain-relieving properties of CBD help to manage nausea and pain. Some clinical studies are showing that CBD could prevent the formation of peroxynitrite and thus protect the neurons from cell death caused by glutamate.
CBD drops for eyes may be the best option to use cannabidiol for the treatment of glaucoma. Many researchers are not encouraging the vaping of CBD because it may lead to unstable intraocular pressure. There is no recommended dosage of CBD for glaucoma treatment. So it is better to start with a low dosage and increase the dosage gradually.
