Making CBD Oil At Home: A Complete Guide

CBD oil is easily available in US markets. However, some may want to try making CBD oil on their own at home because they get control over the type and amount of ingredients that go in. DIY CBD oil is cheaper than CBD oils sold in the market and the quality is uncompromised. Here is a guide to making CBD oil at home.

Step 1: Selecting The Ingredients

To make CBD oil, you will require cannabis strain and carrier oil. The cannabinoid contents vary according to the cannabis strain you choose. If you want minimal THC content in your CBD oil, select hemp flower strain because it will have less than 0.3% THC and is legal for purchase. MCT oil or coconut oil can be selected as your carrier oil, as they have appreciable bioavailability. You may also use hemp seed oil, and coconut oil, etc. For making DIY CBD oil, you will need:

  • 1 oz  of finely ground cannabis flower
  • 16 oz of carrier oil
  • A double boiler
  • Cheesecloth
  • Necessary utensils

Step 2: Decarboxylation

Decarboxylation is the process of converting CBDA to CBD. Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) is the inactive form of CBD and raw cannabis has CBDA and not CBD. The cannabis flowers can be decarboxylated by applying heat. Place the ground cannabis flowers on a cookie sheet in an oven by setting the temperature to 220 – 225 degrees Fahrenheit and heat for an hour. Take the flowers out of the oven and allow it to cool once you are done heating it.

Step 3: Extraction

The next step after decarboxylating the cannabis flower is to mix it with the carrier oil using the double boiling method. The method is used to avoid heating the cannabis material directly. Direct heating may lead to the degradation of the cannabinoids in the flower. In the double boiling method, a smaller pot is placed above a larger pot filled with water, which is placed on the stove. The water in the larger pot is brought to a simmer and the carrier oil and decarbed cannabis flower are added to the smaller pot. Stir the ingredients occasionally. The CBD will completely dissolve in the oil within 2-3 hours. After the time is up, turn off the flame and allow the mixture to cool. Then pour the mixture into a bottle through cheesecloth to strain off the plant matter.

Making high-quality CBD oil is attainable even at home, needless to mention, it is affordable and risk-free too.
